Walking Yoga

What images does the word Yoga conjure up in your head?
  • Somewhere you can develop flexibility
  • Somewhere you can relax and go to sleep
  • A slow-paced class to practice different types of postures
  • A fast class where you practice 40 postures in one hour and sweat

One of the main reasons for joining a Yoga class is to develop flexibility and learn to relax. Yoga is more than postures, it is a connection between the body and spirit through breath

Yoga is both beautiful and generous enough to accommodate all types of bodies and shapes.  Students with poor body image are reluctant to attend yoga classes. They first have to get past the influx of images in the media of lean bodies and expensive sportswear.

A teachers' role is to welcome EveryBody in the class. Yoga is more than a simple sequence of postures. It is about helping a person find themselves to lose their fear and develop confidence.

My experience has been to welcome each student and allow them to practice to the best of their ability. Make slow and steady progress.

Kundalini Yoga is a combination of fast movement, mantra, and breathwork.  It's one of the styles that you either resonate with or not. Kundalini has the ability to enhance intuition for complete transformation.

So how did Walking Yoga take birth...

Teaching Yoga outdoors, we were open to the elements, and one day it rained with 20+ students.  We started practicing standing posture under the trees to protect ourselves from rain. But by the end of the session, the mats were muddy and we got drenched.

With the help of students, I washed all the mats and dried them, which took me almost 2 hours.

The session left me thinking, that teaching in the rain was great but not safe. This gave birth to Walking Yoga.

The benefit of Walking Yoga :
  • Connect with nature
  • We practice all the posture standing up
  • Develop strength in the legs
  • Improve balance
  • Develop greater focus
  • Use trees as props.

To embrace flora and fauna, we practiced walking/mindfulness meditation. Walking yoga is a regular summer and autumn programme.

Outdoor yoga creates a feeling of lightness, is more relaxed and enjoyable.  One is in the natural elements, being able to see the changing sky, clouds floating in and out, playing hide and seek with the sun, feeling the gentle breeze, listening to the rustling of the leaves, birds, squirrels teasing and watching you with curiosity, the soft murmur of walkers, dogs trying to join you...

Mindfulness walking is the favourite part. A time to soothe the senses by connecting with flora, fauna, bees, flies, and butterflies.

I hope you will try out outdoor yoga and see how refreshed you feel both in body and mind.

The meditation can be practiced anywhere, especially in a park, with nature around, you begin to relax quickly.

The book contains detailed information about meditation and how it connects with the layers of the body.
