Unfriend your Pain

Pain is a message to your brain from your body, telling you that there is an issue in the body that needs your attention.

Pain is a disconnection from your emotions.

Has your back been complaining during the lockdown? More and more people find that they have painful back, stiffness around the body by sitting in the chair which is not designed for sitting for long periods.

Our spine and breath support us throughout our life, but how many of us do not think about our back and the connection to our breath?

I have been teaching yoga for over 11 years and like a lot of people, have suffered from different types of back pain, stress on the shoulders, neck pain, upper back pain, lower back pain and, whole body aching. Whenever I visited my doctor, I was given painkillers and asked to move more. I didn't want to take painkillers and I was active. The pain continued even though I was active, that's when I realised that the pain was more than physical pain. I re-started practicing Yoga, which helped with the pain, but still did not understand the root cause of the pain. As I continued to develop a regular yoga practice, I realised that pain was both physical and emotional. My emotional state and whatever stress I had were affecting my spine and muscles.

I started to read and research pain. That's when I came across a therapy, Metamorphic Technique. I was curious about a technique, which did not involve taking a medical history. How would I or the therapist know about the source of my pain...

Anyhow, I decided to attend a weekend workshop. By the end of the workshop, the pain in my back had transformed into less physical and more emotional pain. I continued to have regular Metamorphic sessions. These sessions started to transform my physical and emotional pain into connecting with my body and acknowledging what was going on in my life. The therapy opened a 'window' to review my life and make changes to support both my physical and emotional body.

Through the knowledge of Yoga and Metamorphic Technique, I realised that there were times, my back pain was connected to my emotions, sometimes known, sometimes unknown, buried deep in my subconscious mind.

Once I started teaching Yoga full-time, the majority of the students had back pain without any accidents or injuries. For me, this was one of the many learning processes and so the journey to understand the pain and stuck emotions began to unravel.

I learned that most students suffered from back pain due to poor posture, sitting for long times, and not moving or exercising regularly. Still, one significant insight was that many students held emotions in parts of their back and body which they were unaware of. When I asked them two or three questions about pain, it emerged that the pain was connected to their emotions, such as lower back = bending backwards to help others, pain in the neck = someone is pain in the neck, stiff and painful shoulders = supporting someone and unable to speak up about the stress it is causing them. As soon as these students were made aware of their pain and shown postures to practice, the pain was alleviated in some cases, and the pain disappeared completely. I learned quickly that, it was easier to manage back pain through daily practice of yoga postures and exercise and visualisation.

However, if the pain was due to a major accident to the spine it requires medical help and careful management from the medical professionals.

Teaching and practising Yoga, helped me understand my emotions related to back pain and this journey continues...
